Critical Damage / Critical Chance???

By: DuskKnightofEa

There is much debate about which stat is most beneficial in runes. Critical Damage Runes or Critical Chance, this tip will show you the difference of damage output based on your choice of runes.

Gangplank crits for 284 damage on the enemy Sivir player. This Gangplank has only 24% Critical Chance but no Critical Damage runes

Gangplank crits for 365 damage on the enemy Sivir player. This Gangplank has only 46% Critical Damage and 12% Critical Chance

The most common reaction to the above is that Critical Damage is superior, but lets do a field trip of theorycrafting.

Say we have Champion #1 who has 1.00 Attack Speed with 100 Attack Damage, 50% Critical Chance and 0% Critical Damage.

Now there is another person(Champion #2) with the same damage and attack speed except he has 35% Critical Chance and 56% Critical Damage. Both attack for 5 seconds so 5 attacks. The random number generator brings out numbers 22, 30, 38, 91, and 47. I will use those numbers to determine if the attacks crit or not.

Champion #1 deals 4 Critical Hits each doing 200(4) damage + 1 regular hit(100 damage)= 900 Total Damage (without armor of course).

Champion #2 deals 2 Critical Hits each doing 246(2) Damage + 3 regular hits(300 damage)= 792 Total Damage (without armor of course).

Champion #1 deals more damage even though the player does not have any Critical Damage runes.

It is a lot better to do all Critical Chance runes and you will have a higher chance of having a high damage output against enemy players. The only champion that should be played with all Critical Damage runes is Tryndamere due to high default Critical Chance.

Shaco can guarantee a crit off a deceive, plus his backstab increases it by 25%.
